AAU clubs, travel teams and youth sports nonprofits with a calendar tax year should check their 2025 Form 990 filing status now. For an organization whose tax year ended December 31, 2025, a timely filed Form 8868 generally extends the Form 990 or Form 990-EZ filing deadline to Monday, November 16, 2026.

Who has a November 16 Form 990 extension deadline?

The regular deadline was May 15, 2026. The six-month extension ordinarily ends November 15; because that date falls on Sunday in 2026, the deadline moves to the next business day. This is a deadline for the 2025 return filed in 2026, not the 2026 calendar-year return.

The IRS explains the timing in its annual return due-date guidance and due-date table. Fiscal-year organizations have different dates. Disaster relief or other special rules may also affect a particular organization.

A filing extension has limits

Verify that the extension was timely filed and covers the correct organization, return and tax year. Filing Form 8868 now does not retroactively create a timely extension. An extension to file generally does not extend the time to pay tax. Separate returns may require separate extensions.

Form 990-N is different: its deadline cannot be extended with Form 8868. See the IRS Form 8868 instructions. If your club missed a filing deadline, address it promptly instead of assuming this November date applies.

What should your club organize now?

  • Confirm the legal name, EIN, tax year and applicable Form 990-series filing.

  • Locate the extension acceptance and prior return.

  • Reconcile bank and payment-app activity, team fees, donations, sponsorships and fundraising receipts.

  • Organize coach payments, travel expenses, grants and compensation records.

  • Allow time for review, required schedules, authorization and electronic filing; retain the IRS acceptance.

Why filing history matters

Late filing can have consequences. An organization required to file that misses required returns or notices for three consecutive years can automatically lose its federal tax-exempt status. Review the IRS automatic revocation guidance. AAU membership alone does not establish who files for your club.
